Buddhi Shala Etiquette
Suggestions to help direct us on the path of yoga at the Buddhi shala:
-
Treat the shala as your sacred space. It is.
-
Maintain the quiet as much as possible.
-
Stay in integrity with how you manage your shala account. Pay the correct amount on or before the day it is due. Three payment bands are provided to accommodate all budgets.
-
Use one of our mats for a couple of months if needed. Then purchase your own.
-
Drink water after class. Not during.
-
No strong perfumes to be worn during practice.
-
Come clean and / or shower before class. Wear clean clothing that is modest and comfortable. It is traditional not to shower immediately after class.
-
Dynamic movement of energy occurs at the front of the room. The back of the room is a place to be quiet and (more) still. Please lie down, meditate or sit to breathe at the back of the room, not the front. Practice standing and seated asana at the front of the room not the back. Finishing asana may be practiced at the front or back of the room.
-
Practice consciousness and energy awareness from the moment you enter the property. For example, by tidily and quietly placing your shoes, your belongings and your mat.
-
Do not eat immediately before practice. You digestive system should be as empty as possible. Best to eat nothing or only clean / light food 2-4 hours before practice.
-
Wash your cloth mat regularly. Mat spray is provided to clean your rubber / cork yoga mat.
-
Pay attention to your own monthly and annual cycles. During the heavy part of your menstrual cycle best not activate strongly uddiyana and mula bandha, nor do inversions.
-
If you are contagious please practice at home. If you have a fever do not practice.
-
If you have an injury then practice in a way that supports healing. Some practice is always possible - just come, sit and breathe. Great transformational potential exists in the practice of non-attachment (vairagya) by cultivating detachment from sensory desires, cravings, and the fruits of action. Let go and show up 100% in whatever body, and mind you have today.
-
Practice more than you talk about practice. A good guide is 99% practice and 1% chat. Avoid idle conversation about another’s practice.
-
Respect class finish times. A shorter practice that defies habit, desire and expectation holds great possibility for personal transformation. Show up, accept and practice in the time available.
Om shanti, shanti, shanti
