Why drink from copper?
We are what we consume and in the yogic tradition there are specific do’s and don’t for all aspects of food & life. Drinking water from copper is recommended in the Ayuvedic and Yogic sciences.
Water has memory & hence great care has to be taken when storing it. Copper is one of the best conducting metals and it energizes the water. If you check the chemical composition of the water, it will not change. Only the molecular structure of the water will change.
One or our great modern yogis, Sadhguru, says “if you keep water in a copper vessel overnight or for about six hours and then drink it, you will see that the water will feel very different and various small ailments that people have can be just healed simply by keeping the water in an appropriate space. An appropriate space also means proper aeration and above all, your thoughts and emotions about the water, being conscious that this is a major ingredient of who you are right now. Water is not a commodity, it is life-making material. I have seen many people walking out of chronic ailments just by changing the water that they drink and how they drink.”
Try spending a moment of gratitude and reverence before you consume water – as this is the stuff with which you are making your life!
Maximising the benefit
In Ayurveda it is recommended to store water in a copper vessel for about 8 hours before consumption. This allows the water can get fully ionized before consumption.
Copper vessels can be used regularly and can keep water fresh and free of bacteria. Ayurveda also suggests a gap of 1-2 weeks after every three months of using the copper vessel.
Is copper safe to drink from?
Whilst drinking from copper has been practiced by Ayurveda for centuries, the benefit of the practice has increasingly gained attention and at times been questioned in mainstream science. In several recent scientific studies, it was determined not only that water stored in a copper vessel can have attractive health benefits, but also that there is no risk of getting too much copper using that method.
The World Health Organization concluded that it is safe for the body to consume up to 2mg of copper per litre of water. Research shows that water stored in a copper vessel for several hours absorbs less than 1/20th of that amount of copper, very far below safe limits.
Caring for copper drinking vessels
Use only for pure water. Do not put acidic juices, such as orange, lemon or grape juice, in the copper drinking vessels.
These vessels are made from solid copper and will discolour and tarnish over time with use. If you prefer the shine of copper, then try sprinkling a pinch of salt on a slice of lemon, allow the salt to dissolve, and then gently rub the salted lemon on the surface to regain the copper’s shine. Once done, rinse with water and dry well.
Discolouration on the inside of the vessel has no effect on the quality of the water stored. However, if you wish to clean the inside of the vessel you can add 2 TBSP of concentrated lemon juice, 1 TBSP of sea salt, 1 cup of water, shake for 2 minutes, give any stubborn areas a scrub with a dish/bottle brush and flush clean with cold water, ensuring all acidic residue is washed away. Alternatively you can use warm water and a drop of liquid soap. Then rinse well before use.
Never wash your copper water drinking vessels in a dishwasher.
NOTE: These bottles have one or two dents in them. They were damaged in transit. The dents do not impact their working capability. Just their looks!
